SSUSA Celebrates 5th Annual NYC Cup at Times Square

This Saturday, July 15th, from 9am-11pm, Street Soccer USA will take over Times Square for its 5th annual event in the heart of New York City. The Street Soccer USA NYC Cup at Times Square is the world’s premier Street Soccer event and a Sport For Social Change initiative wrapped into one. Over 1,500 people have participated in the event since its inception in 2012.

At the NYC Cup at Times Square 2017, nearly 100 youth and young adults from across the Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Manhattan will compete in a Youth Showcase from 11am-3pm. SSUSA program participants currently experiencing homelessness will also have an opportunity to take the field at this one-of-a-kind event.

Not only will Street Soccer USA’s participants bring their skills to the NYC Cup at Times Square, but they will play on fields usually located in their communities. Basketball-court sized, transportable Street Soccer Stadiums from Red Hook and East New York will be installed by SSUSA in the Times Square Plazas on 43rd/44th Street for the event and returned the following day in time for SSUSA’s summer community programming to resume.

In addition to the Youth Showcase, New York City Council Members, led by Council Member Carlos Menchaca, will play a special match with program participants and former professional players from Spain’s Real Madrid and other teams. These retired players are representatives of AFE, the Spanish Soccer Players Union, a new partner of SSUSA. The AFE-SSUSA initiative will focus on on-field instruction and coach support through a unique training program set to launch in early 2018.

Preceding and following the Youth Showcase is the Corporate Cup, a competitive tournament featuring local and international teams playing the exciting, fast paced, highly skilled Street Soccer USA 4v4 format. Games average 9.8 goals per match and feature live commentary, three field players and one goaltender in walled street soccer arenas. A day of fourteen-minute matches will result in a champion crowned in the final match at 10pm in the evening.
