San Francisco Cup Brings Together Bay Area

The 2019 Street Soccer USA Cup Series began with the hugely successful fifth annual Street Soccer USA Cup – San Francisco on Sunday, July 28. Two specially-made turf fields at Civic Center were bustling all day with hundreds of players, from professional athletes to local government officials to corporate sponsors to program participants, who all joined together to #PlayforMore.

Some highlights of the Street Soccer USA Cup – SF included:

A special visit from San Francisco Mayor London Breed to the SSUSA Civic Center Park during a practice with kids in the lead-up to the Cup from Hamilton Families Shelter and other youth from the Mission and Tenderloin neighborhoods.

More than 500 players participating in Youth, Open and Corporate Cup matches.

Almost 200 youth from our city-wide street leagues playing in the Youth Cup. Neighborhoods represented: Mission, Tenderloin, Western Addition, Potrero, Bayview, North Beach, SOMA, Sunset, Richmond.

The #UnityMatch, a goodwill soccer game featuring professional athletes, city officials and program participants. Players included American soccer star and TV personality Kyle Martino, San Jose Earthquakes players Tommy Thompson and Nick Lima, Stanford Men’s Head Soccer Coach Jeremy Gunn, and General Manager of SF Recreation and Park Department Phil Ginsburg

The Open Cup featuring 7 of Street Soccer USA’s community street soccer club programs of teenagers and young adults living in low-income neighborhoods. Each team was sponsored to play by a local business. The Examiner wrote an article about Moheeb Ali, a Street Soccer USA player on the Tenderloin Street Soccer Club sponsored by Future Sense. Matches taking place at Civic Center as part of special summer Street Soccer USA installation in partnership with SF Recreation and Park Department, as part of an ongoing effort to make the Civic Center’s public spaces safe, welcoming, and fun. Learn more about that project here.

The tournament was made possible by support from National Partners Help USA, UNIQLO, and ESPN; Official Cup Sponsors MLS WORKS, FutureSense, Hall Capital Partners, Senda Athletics; City Partners Recreation and Park Department, Department of Children, Youth and their Families, The Shared Schoolyard Project; and the ongoing support from our community-based program partners and private donors.

 Mayor London Breed visited the SSUSA Civic Center Park.

SSUSA Chairman of the Board and US Soccer Star Kyle Martino hosted the annual #UnityMatch.

Kids from SSUSA Program in the Mission won the Youth Cup.
