Street Soccer USA Cup 2010 - Countdown Begins to July 30 Kickoff
While the FIFA World Cup takes place in June and July in South Africa, this summer Washington DC is the stage for a unique "sport for social change event": more than 200 homeless soccer players from 18 cities coast to coast compete for the Street Soccer USA Championship 2010.
From July 30 to August 1 everyone is invited to enjoy fast-paced, 4 versus 4 street soccer action during the day and under the lights in the 2,500 seat Washington Kastles Stadium in downtown Washington.
This year teams of males and females from 18 cities will compete for the Championship. The teams, associated with various social agencies, represent a variety of grassroots, city wide, and national homeless service providers.
From among the participating homeless street soccer teams, SSUSA selects the U.S. National Men Team that will travel to the Homeless World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in September.
For the first time in Street Soccer USA history "The Lady Salamanders", an all-women team will be chosen to go on to represent the United States at the Homeless World Cup. The 64-nation tournament features 16 women's teams this year.
The SSUSA Cup also comprises an opening day Parade of States, Celebrity First Kick, exhibition matches, food, fun for the whole family and a "one of a kind" act. "Khao" Cates, the Grammy nominated producer of music icons like T.I., Ludacris, Pharell, and Snoop Dogg will take the stage on Saturday, July 31st.
