Deloitte Volunteers to help the Homeless

Deloitte Volunteers

Giving up some free time can not only benefit others in need but it is also rewarding for those volunteering for a worthy cause. Whether it is a small or large project or event, volunteering promotes a sense of accomplishment and community building.

Street Soccer USA, like many other non-profit organizations appreciates any volunteer help for their programs and events throughout the year.  Elizabeth "Lizzy" Redman is a leading example of what it means for a socially conscious corporation to become involved in the community by giving back.

"I started working with SSUSA in April 2009. I have stayed involved since then, recognizing what a great organization it is!"

Deloitte partner Dan Helfrich, being completely immersed in the program as the Washington D.C. team coach, has encouraged his staff to get involved with Street Soccer USA. Deloitte has provided volunteers like Lizzy, logistical planning support and has even hosted the Potluck for the 2009 USA Cup. Not only does Street Soccer USA offer volunteers the opportunity to interact with individual players but professionals like Lizzy are able to strengthen their consulting skills as well.

Having previously worked with another homeless organization, SOME (So Others May Eat) in the Washington D.C. area and when Deloitte began facilitating sessions with SSUSA, it seemed like another great fit for her.

"I have an interest and previously had a background in social entrepreneurship so it was exciting to support a social venture poised for such high growth and impact. Since then, I have become a strong believer in the mission."

She has worked directly with Founder and CEO, Lawrence Cann developing the organization's business plan, planning the SSUSA Cup tournaments and providing support for the Sport for Social Change Awards. "When you work with SSUSA, you are working with people who are great to be around and passionate about a cause."

1. How has this experience changed your outlook on the issue of homelessness?

"Being involved with SSUSA has changed my perspective on what being homeless means and how someone arrives at that set of circumstances. Now, when I see a homeless person, I see them as a person. I know they have a name, a history, and a very unfortunate present that needs to change."

2. What would you say to other business professionals who are not involved in the community like you?

"Working in the private sector, one thing that has been impressive is the vast numbers of individuals who do seem to be involved in the community. For those who aren't, I would challenge them to get involved to realize the rewards that can be seen as a volunteer, board member, pro-bono worker, as well as the rewards that the organization will receive. As a business professional, you have a perspective that is unique but also valuable."

In June 2010, Deloitte and SSUSA also hosted sessions for a day with the theme "Partnering to Help the Homeless." Deloitte continues to be involved in the community providing logistical and consulting support for SSUSA and other homeless organizations in the DC area.
