In an oversized, black jacket and sweats, looking more like a rock star from New Jersey than one of the greatest ever Italian athletic talents to grace a soccer field, Alessandro Del Piero wandered onto Street Soccer TVB Park in the Bronx this past Saturday morning.
He found a soccer ball almost immediately and put on a juggling show for the forty Street Soccer youth ages 17-20 who had come to meet him. When I handed him the microphone to speak, he looked down at the turf, paused for several seconds, as if nervous or shy, then shrugged his shoulders and said quietly, “Probably my greatest moment on the football field . . . [another long pause] was winning the World Cup and lifting the World Cup trophy . . .”
Need he have said anything else that day.
Thanks to our partners at Lega Serie A, not only did Del Piero pay us this special visit, but his visit was followed by a career panel of young sports marketing and communication professionals. The panel served as the kickoff to the spring season of our our Media Center Partnership with Serie A, designed to create pathways to professional careers in sports marketing and digital media for the youth we serve.
